And here’s the thing people forget: as adults we do this too. Had a bad day? Ice cream always fixes it! So I’m sure ending the hard day with ice cream really made him feel better 🥹🥹🥹

Also, as an adult, if I got home and the only food in my house wasn’t what I wanted, I also wouldn’t eat. Like, we act like kids are so unreasonable when really we just have more control over our environment.

Kids should be kids! My mom highly encouraged fruits and vegetables but we also had ice cream for breakfast sometimes or snacked on a tub of frosting. My grandma had sweets hidden around the house (so my grandpa wouldn’t eat them all lol plus, lots of grandkids coming and going) and she would sneak some to me when my dad had said no. As an adult I never have ice cream for breakfast or buy tubs of frosting to snack on cuz I just don’t crave it like that, I actually crave vegetables most of the time tbh. I think as long as the kids are eating (and enjoying) healthy foods it doesn’t really matter if or when they have sweets. Let them enjoy their life before all the difficult stuff comes (adulting)

As someone who definitely got the ‘if you misbehave we won’t take you to get food from out/give you a treat’, it DEFINITELY made me associate food with treats and justify binge eating junk with having ‘earned it’ by doing my work or whatever

My 3 year old would realise this is how he gets away with not eating proper food and just skips straight to pudding and he’d do this constantly 😅

Food isn’t an emotional currency, but dessert is not a guarantee. when you reward bad behaviour you discredit good behaviour.

Hot take: sometimes misbehavior is caused because our body doesn’t have the proper energy/nutrients it needs to be well regulated and adding sugar into the mix makes that worse. Easy fix: explain “I see how you’re acting and I think it’s because your body needs more protein/fiber/carbs/whatever. Let’s fuel up our body a bit and then we can have the fun thing because having a healthy body/mind is the most important thing to do”

Ice cream has protein & calcium so if that’s all they eat for that meal, it’s not the worst meal in the world

THIS!!! Also, if the problem is dysregulation, sometimes you just need a win to snap you out of it. I am forever in favor of finding something that calms everyone down or brings some joy into the moment

our big food "rules" - Food is not a reward or punishment - Food holds no moral value. Food is not good or bad, some food nourishes our body, and some food nourishes our soul. - Chocolate makes everything better 😅

Food as a reward or as a coping mechanism was utilized soooo much when I was a kid. It’s so hard for me to not lean towards food now as a coping mechanism when I’m stressed / sad, etc. 😭

I love the ice cream at the table part bc it’s not really asking him to be any particular way, that’s just where ice cream is being served. I’m sure also the opportunity to begin again with not only something he does like but also with his group and is still seen as lovable is also a reward in itself. 🥰✨

As an adult, I try to always remember that eating is one of the few things children have control over, and I don’t want to mess that up. And for toddlers, you look at what they eat across the week, not just in one day. So, yeah, don’t punish with food. Keep calm and try again the next meal or the next day.

Still having that boundary of “you have to be able to join us at the table to have it” feels so important, it’s a grounding moment for the kid and bonding for the family

How do you deal with your children refusing to eat dinner if they know they will get a pudding regardless ? Eg my 4 yo will refuse to eat any meal if she knows she'll get Fruit / Desert / ice cream after . She'll say she's not hungry / doesn't like it / but will eat the pudding ? How do you enforce that they eat a balanced diet and not just rubbish because they prefer the sweeter stuff ?

YES food should never be used as a punishment / discipline, food should be neutral / separate from the above
