My partner is like this! She describes it as “wanting to move anonymously”. She loves a class but wants to just show up, do as she’s instructed and then leave. Any specific call out makes her feel like she loses that anonymity and she hates it.

100% agree w all of this. I'm already self-conscious about being unfit compared to most at the gym, so being told to "push myself" can feel like judgement (this is me already pushing myself!) and "I'm proud of you" can feel patronising

Welp. You just helped me realize why I *only* enjoy dance classes. All of the feedback - positive and negative - is tangible and measurable. "You need to turn out your hips more." "Beautiful extension on that." "Keep your heels down on the plie." The abundance of clear and direct communication really scratches an itch in my brain 😁😅

It’s so funny because some of these things I totally 100% agree with you on and others I don’t at all. Like, I also hate the fake supportiveness (at work ESPECIALLY), but am super competitive and love to be competitive against others who are also super into it. And motivation doesn’t bother me nearly as much as praise. It’s funny how different we all are.

Yes! - Excessive praise feels condescending and disingenuous - too much pressure annoys me and makes me shut down and not want to do anything you say Just guide me on what to do to target certain areas and help correct my form if I'm doing a workout in a way that might strain me too much
