Are they empathizing with the villain because of the failure if the author? or Are they empathizing with the villain because their true nature feels validated?

I adored Fight Club and how it explored the morally wrong protagonist and I found it fascinating

Protagonist is not a synonym for the “good guy”

Writers don’t have an obligation to dumb down their stories just because 100% of the audience doesn’t pick up on the message.

Is the STORY failing? Or maybe it’s some VIEWERS who have failed? Just because people fail to understand the film doesn’t mean the movie failed. A viewer has a responsibility too

I don’t think that it’s fair to say that a piece of media failed at the thing It was trying to communicate because there are people who misunderstood it because it is impossible to create a piece of media that cannot be misunderstood.

Somehow millions of people watched this and decided it’s some deep insight that Bear is “not a good guy” and that it’s really, really important they tell everyone this. It’s bizarre

It’s impossible to make everyone understand the intent, I’ve watched all of these medias and it was painfully obvious. People just choose to not understand sometimes

He dies at the end. Theres an arc. Call him whatever you want - villain, protagonist - He's the central character. I'm not understanding the great failure you speak of.

Just because a portion of the audience empathizes with the villain doesn’t mean the attempt to write a story from the villain’s perspective failed lol. People empathize with villains regardless of whether a story is told from their perspective or not. Some of these authors did a better job than others at making it clear how villainous exactly their protagonists were but the misconception that these protagonists are good isn’t because the author failed.

protagonist and hero/good guy are not synonyms. hero is a moral judgement, while protagonist is an objective descriptor of what role the character serves in the narrative. same with villain vs antagonist. Bear is the protagonist and Nikki is the antagonist. this is objectively true, however saying Bear is a hero implies a failure of media literacy.

Maybe they hope that if they frame it that way, the audience might actually see themselves in the story more, and it might just challenge them? Like villain representation?

Empathizing with a villain doesn’t make them the hero, it makes them human. The best villains are the ones whose motives are not pure evil. Bear is a self centered, weak, terrible person but his desire to be loved is his motive and that’s something we can all relate to.

I don't think any of those stories failed just because 100% of the audience didn't get it. 100% of the audience is never going to get it. If someone got it, if the movie got the message it was trying to convey to someone, it succeeded.

They don’t “fail” - the objective of art is not to have the audience be monolithic in their interpretation.

yo. seeing him as the protagonist is correct. He is the protagonist. He's also a villain. The protagonist is the main character of the Story. The driving force for the narrative. The antagonist is the opposing force. What are you on about?

I would call it a failure of media literacy. Rick and Morty, Bojack Horseman, and Breaking Bad are all good examples of this too. None of the main characters in any of these are meant to be redeemable or good people.

I am not seeing how empathizing with the villain in these movies is somehow a failure if you can only be empathetic to people you view as "good" then what is the use of your empathy?
