As time goes on.. I find myself reflecting on marriage with a different kind of maturity. When I was younger, I thought readiness for marriage could be measured by a checklist: by money, by knowledge, confidence, stability, life experience.. I believed that one day I would simply wake up and feel completely prepared to take on such a responsibility. But as the years have passed I’ve come to realise that perhaps nobody ever reaches that moment of complete certainty. Marriage is one of the greatest blessings Allah can grant a person, but it’s also one of the greatest tests. It isn’t just two people falling in love and sharing a home. It’s two imperfect souls learning to navigate life together whilst carrying different experiences, different wounds, different personalities and different expectations. It requires sacrifice, sabr and mercy when pride wants to take over. It asks two people to continually choose one another, even on the days when choosing each other feels harder than it did yesterday. Sometimes I hear people say that they want to wait until they are completely ready before pursuing marriage, and I understand that sentiment. There is wisdom in wanting to prepare yourself. We should strive to strengthen our relationship with Allah, improve our character, develop emotional maturity and become financially responsible where possible. These things matter a lot, but I also believe that the idea of becoming 100% ready is, in many ways, an illusion that none of us will ever truly attain. The truth quickly becomes obvious: nobody enters marriage possessing every answer. Every couple begins with uncertainties they could never have anticipated. Every marriage introduces challenges that neither husband nor wife could have prepared for beforehand. Life has a way of revealing parts of ourselves that only become visible when we are responsible for another person’s heart. It’s because readiness cannot be measured by one quality alone. It’s not simply about wealth, nor imaan, nor maturity, communication, patience or emotional intelligence, although all of these qualities are invaluable. Readiness is the continual pursuit of all of these things combined, whilst simultaneously accepting that there will always be room for growth. And even then, life will present situations that humble you and remind you how much you still have to learn. And perhaps that is exactly why I long for marriage so deeply. I know there’ll be responsibilities that feel overwhelming and seasons that test both of us in different ways. I’ve heard the stories.. I’ve heard the stories of marriages that struggled beneath the weight of pride and neglect. But I’m not approaching this with naivety. I’m aware of the inevitable.. The beauty of marriage has never been that it removes hardship from life. You laugh together, cry together, make duá together and slowly build a life that neither of you could have built independently. Perhaps the greatest preparation for marriage isn’t becoming flawless, but becoming humble enough to know that you never will be. And that is why, above everything else, I place my trust in Allah. I trust that He knows the state of my heart better than I do. I just know I’ll be safe so long as everything is in His hands. Marriage remains the deepest dream within my heart, not because I expect it to complete me, but because I believe it will shape me. It will challenge me, humble me, soften me and teach me lessons I can’t learn alone. It will demand sacrifice, patience and all my reliance upon Allah. Because the greatest dreams are rarely the easiest to attain, and the most meaningful journeys are often the ones that require the greatest amounts of tawakkul. May Allah prepare our hearts before He joins our hands, place barakah within our homes before they are built, and make our marriages a means of drawing us ever closer to Him until He reunites us beneath His eternal mercy. Ameen. #yxssincapalot #marriage
