Anyone who suggests The Knight and the Moth is doing you dirty, it was the most mid, lackluster romance 😬

Not a smut hater by ANY MEANS!!! But a lot of readers expect spice quickly, which means the development timeline is squashed and there’s little room to grow after. I miss a gooooood yearning slow burn, especially in multi-book series 😭

I will forever be in search of something that makes me feel how The Raven Boys series made me feel when I read it for the first time.

if Gideon and Harrow end up together in Alecto the Ninth it will be a will-they-won‘t-they for the ages contender but I feel like big book casts where the constellation of pairings are a mystery for the longest time (Raven Cycle) or if they even end up together (Six of Crows) is a lost art that died out in the 2010s

Tried to convince my friend to read Cruel Prince and she said she couldn’t stand that Cardan was so mean to Jude 😭 tried to convince her that the payoff was WORTH IT

My take is that what happened is that when fourth wing blew up publishers flooded the market with every romantasy they could get their hands on and now you have to search through a lot more titles to get to the good stuff. Same thing happened after twilight with paranormal books, and after the hunger games with dystopian books.

Every time I pick up a book I want to feel as alive as I did when Kaz said he wanted to bottle inej’s laugh and every time I am disappointed.

I feel like the slow death of YA fantasy as the popular fantasy subgenre in publishing and marketing is at least somewhat to blame for this because no adult/new adult fantasy I’ve read has had iconic romance subplots like those classic 2010s series

Highly rec Alix E Harrow, specifically The Everlasting (less will they won’t they, more slow burn)

the will they/ wont they slow burn isn't used as much because it delays or limits the sex scenes present in the books and publishers are really pushing authors to include smut. even the author of the Cruel Prince has said she was pressured to make her book steamier and she thought she already had.

Because everyone writes around tropes these days and not actual development between the characters that feel organic.

This is also a problem in a lot of tv shows now I HATE it 😭 everything is either a fastburn or platonic with nothing in between

Seek The Traitor's Son has a romance that is actually interesting, unique, and a slow burn for very understandable reasons

Those books are my favourites and I’m reading A Winter’s Promise quartet at the moment and it SLAPS. True slow burn and the characters are some of the most interesting I’ve ever experienced. YA just does it better 🤷‍♀️
