Lesson learned: don’t show hubris EVER. Especially to a woman who birthed two Gods. - I’ve been itching to post something about these two for a WHILE. I worked on their designs so that they would look alike and complete opposites at the same time! I hope it makes sense to you guys too! Anyway, as always, I’ll give you all a little backstory of this myth, for those who are interested! Niobe was the daughter of king Tantalus, and her story is a classic example of hubris. (Hubris is showing extreme arrogance and pride, for those who don’t know!). Niobe had had many healthy children (some sources mention up to 20 kids, even if most ageee on 12/14), and because of her position and wealth, she began proclaiming herself superior to the Gods. She then disrespected Leto, by saying she was especially superior to her, because Leto, as the goddess of motherhood, had only had two children, Apollo and Artemis, whilst Niobe had had many. Of course, the two twins couldn’t let this disrespect slide. So, to avenge their mother, they took their bows and arrows and slaughtered every last one of Niobe’s children, Apollo killing every son, Artemis every daughter. There are many versions of this myth of course, i’m just telling the most common version!! (I’ve been drawing Apollo in almost every post, and that’s kinda crazy.
