Let’s check in when you are 60. Your friends will be mortgage-free and you’ll still be paying rent that has gone up every year for 30 years and will continue to go up for the next 30 years

Paying rent is simply a different way of participating in the same machine.

Investing is also participating in a more sinister way of moving your money with high volatility and no guaranteed results, but sure, don't buy a home.

My partner and I have been renting for 16 years, we’ve saved $900k. Should be 2M when we retire. And zero home repairs or yard work. We live in a beautiful neighborhood by the ocean. I will never regret not buying.

Issue with renting is the constant moving. You never feel stable. The landlord/owner can also decide so sell at any given point, nullifying your contract.

I’ve rented for 35 years and here’s my take on it (and I understand where you’re coming from, but as someone who’s rented for a long time my experience is very valid)-you can be thrown out after your lease is up with no clue where to go, they control if you can have fuzzy companions, air conditioning, types of curtains and a bunch of other crap. Considering how much I’ve spent in rent I could have purchased many homes, you have no control on rent increases every year, there are so many negatives and at my age I’ll have nothing when I retire. I could never afford to buy a home and with renting could never save enough for any sort of down payment. So long term renting has more negatives than positives.

We bought our house in 1998 for $300K. We can sell it tomorrow for $1.2 million. I think it was a pretty good decision.

Your home, the place you live, sleep, eat, raise your family, create memories and work on so hard to beautify to your liking may end up being the largest asset you own and to own it debt free when you are older will make you feel safe and is a great foundation to your retirement plan. Just saying...

Why does everything have to be about money, investing, maximizing returns, and building wealth for the future? Why can't a home just be a home? What's wrong with wanting to buy a house because you want somewhere that's yours? A place no landlord can decide to take away. A place where, as long as you pay your bills, you have security. A place that can be your forever home. Somewhere you can build a life, raise a family, create memories, and truly belong. Why is that not enough?

Who has excess cash after paying rent? Most do not. Buying a home is building equity. But nice try.
