Spend 4 days and 3 nights in the rainforest of Borneo with me. 🍃 One of the main tours in Sabah is a Kinabantangan River Cruise. It’s the second longest river in Malaysia and surrounded by a wildlife sanctuary so is famous for the chance to see the Borneo ‘Big 5’. I was really cautious of doing a tour here. I’ve seen the videos of hundreds of people in boats surrounding one animal, of people approaching at full speed or even baiting wildlife. I was really worried about contributing to damaging over tourism and disrupting wildlife. But! I wanted to give it a shot and see if there was a different way of doing things. In my research, I found KOPEL. 💚 KOPEL is a community co-op that is working to utilise eco-tourism to generate sustainable, long-term income for local people. The focus is on finding ways to co-exist with and regenerate the rainforest that was largely lost to logging and development along the lower Kinabantangan River. One of their projects is the Tungog Rainforest Eco Camp (TREC). We stayed in a beautiful little room on stilts, with no power except for in the communal area (sometimes in the room at night), a cold bucket shower that was the most refreshing experience in the world after the rainforest hikes, and had the joy of being the only tourists on the river for our cruises. As well as trekking and river cruises, we learnt about the tree planting project, planted our own baby trees, an visited an ancient burial cave. We saw so much from the river and just from walking around camp, it felt really like immersing yourself in the rainforest. This is also where I had my first sighting of a wild Orangutan, spotted in the trees just outside our accommodation. 🥺🦧 I absolutely loved our time at TREC, it was the highlight of our trip. My only note: take your own red light torches for nighttime walks as otherwise white light is used which is more invasive for the wildlife. I’d love to see this changed in future. ♥️ (Made using a CapCut template 📽️) #borneo #sabah #kinabatangan @KOPEL ECO TOURS
