As a mortgage advisor I can 100% say for certain that stamp duty stops people moving homes. It's a mindless and regressive tax.

But also - first time buyer relief is so low, comparable to the price of houses nowadays. So the ability as a buyer to even take that first step is so much harder because I have to pay the government for the pleasure of BUYING A PROPERTY

Tax is a good thing if you actually spend it on high quality education, not on low quality education and loads of bureaucracy. The question not is whether tax is necessary to pay for education but whether the money raised by taxes actually ends up there and leads to high quality education.
