As a mortgage advisor I can 100% say for certain that stamp duty stops people moving homes. It's a mindless and regressive tax.

I’m here for higher income taxes for wealthier people, I’m here for wealth tax on extreme assets, I’m here for inheritance tax, but stamp duty? A tax that takes place seemingly for no reason during a private purchase?? Don’t get it.

much worse is the process of buying a property in the UK. The stamp duty is inconsequential compared to the 3 month wait, painful dealing with solicitors back and forward, and the huge stress and uncertainty that anyone can pull out at any time.
