Angels Flight and a disappearing Bunker Hill. 🚋🌴🎞️ This might be one of the coolest pieces of Los Angeles footage we’ve found yet because it captures an entire LA neighborhood WHILE it was disappearing. This is from Angels Flight, a remarkable 16mm documentary made by Edmund Penney and collaborators about the little funicular railway and the old Bunker Hill neighborhood surrounding it. Much of the footage was shot in 1965, with additional material from Angels Flight’s final days at its original location in 1969. And this isn’t a modern documentary recreating what Bunker Hill used to look like. The filmmakers were actually THERE as demolition was happening. The film opens among the old Victorian houses and hotels before bringing us aboard Angels Flight itself. We see its two bright orange cars, Sinai and Olivet, climbing between Hill and Olive Streets. We meet passengers who actually lived on Bunker Hill. We watch the railway operators at work. We hear the machinery. We look out from the cars onto streets and buildings that no longer exist. And then the wrecking balls arrive. There are extraordinary sequences where Angels Flight continues calmly moving up and down the hill while bulldozers, cranes and wrecking balls demolish the neighborhood around it. That contrast is basically the entire story of Bunker Hill. Beginning in the late 1800s, Bunker Hill was one of LA’s fashionable residential districts, filled with Victorian houses and mansions overlooking Downtown. As the city expanded, many became apartments and rooming houses. By the mid-20th century, city officials had targeted Bunker Hill for urban renewal. The result was one of the most dramatic transformations in Los Angeles history. The old houses came down. Residents were displaced. Streets disappeared or changed. In their place came the skyscrapers, hotels, plazas and cultural institutions of modern Bunker Hill. But through much of the demolition, Angels Flight just KEPT RUNNING. The railway had opened in 1901 to connect the Downtown business district below with Bunker Hill above. Its two cars carried generations of Angelenos up and down that ridiculously steep grade. Finally, on May 18, 1969, Sinai and Olivet made their last trips at the original Third Street location. The railway was dismantled and placed in storage. And then came the wild part: Los Angeles actually SAVED IT. After 27 years away, Angels Flight reopened in 1996, rebuilt about half a block south of its original location. The neighborhood around it was almost completely different, but the little orange cars survived. ❤️ That’s why this film hits differently from ordinary vintage Los Angeles footage. You’re watching Downtown LA caught between two versions of itself: Victorian Bunker Hill disappearing while the modern city of concrete, steel and glass is beginning to replace it. And you’re seeing real residents, real streets, real houses and everyday life in a neighborhood that essentially no longer exists. If you love Angels Flight, Bunker Hill history, Downtown Los Angeles, DTLA, Victorian architecture, urban renewal, lost Los Angeles, historic neighborhoods, vintage LA, historic transportation, old Downtown LA + archival footage, SAVE THIS ONE. 🌴🔍 🌴📍👟 And if all those Victorian houses have you wanting MORE, come explore surviving pieces of Old Los Angeles with us!
