@therapistinrecovery: Spoiler alert but if you’re asking the question its probably OCD. And listen, everyone’s OCD is valid, but valid doesn’t mean helpful. So ANYTIME you’re in question about whether a thought or urge should be acted (aka compulsed on), air on the side of your neglected values. Which usually means NOT doing the compulsion and instead focusing on the values that your ocd neglects. Or at the very least WAITING, using my ocd steps (in previous videos), and/or minimizing compulsive responses to the degree you can. If you truly want to heal, this is well worth the “risk” of your thought being “right”. #ocdtok #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #rocd #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy #exposuretherapy

I’ve never sought a formal diagnosis but I can trace my compulsions/intrusive thoughts back to early childhood. I think (?) like many disorders, OCD exists on a spectrum. My compulsions were always harmless to others (rituals like tracing my eyes around every wall perimeter, 7x7 times of a room I’ve never been in Nope, not 49 times, counting in my head 7 times, 7 times. I know it doesn’t logically’make the room safe’ but the compulsion brings comfort. Throughout my life, some compulsions have faded away and been replaced by other fairly minor compulsions (using my finger to trace the last word of a persons sentence on my leg). I have ZERO idea why a particular compulsion will appear, and why a particular replacement appears. I’ve had stressful experiences where intrusive thoughts amp up (mostly surrounding that I’ve failed somewhere, have/will cause a harm to someone, or I’m getting fired)….thankfully I had an obsession/compulsion to devour literature on psychology, sociology, anthropology and learned to use ‘logic’ to quickly look for facts/evidence and quickly dismiss intrusive thoughts.

How about the frustration that comes with this. My partner has ROCD. Listening I absolutely hear this and feel this matches.

I love the way you speak about OCD as a fellow OCD therapist! Do you have any of your favourite trainings or books!? Always looking to learn more!

My ocd just played whack a mole wth different topics and subtypes until I actually dealt with the dynamics in my life that chronically made me feel like I couldn’t live in reality fully without consequences ( mostly within my family system where I had to stay quiet to keep the relationships). I feel like the trauma part of OCD is often overlooked. If i’m chronically gaslighting myself out of my own inner knowing of course my brain is going to continue to tell me to be on guard and that there’s hidden danger. I still have to do the ERP work but until i saw the bigger pattern It was constant symptom management for a new kind of obsession
