as a catalan speaker he did quite well considering he probably didnt have much time to practice!!! we really appreciated the effort, especially since gaudí was truly invested in preserving the catalan language and culture

Catalan speaker here. I think there was an effort behind his speech, with some pronunciation errors that could have been avoided just with more phonetic information at hand, like -ig pronounced -ich.

also it’s important to say that Catalan is the own language of Catalonia, while Spanish, even if it’s official nowadays, was imposed some centuries ago.

It is important to understand the plurality of cultures and languages in Spain. Personally, I wish Galiza, Euskal Herria, and the Països Catalans were independent. I’ve always seen how Spanish is imposed in our daily lives, and this makes me worry about the loss of our identities. I’m very happy that Pope Leo XIV spoke Catalan!
