@rapidresponseshow: Ford CEO Jim Farley believes the company's Universal EV could be its Model T moment. In conversation with Rapid Response host Bob Safian, Jim details how he challenged his engineering team to build the most affordable, most efficient electric vehicle on the planet — and beat BYD doing it. The result is a radically simplified three-part design: large unit castings at the front and rear, with a battery forming the center of the car. Jim calls it the most dramatic rethink of automotive assembly in 125 years, abandoning the sequential build process Ford itself pioneered.
I saw BYD cars while in the Philippines. They are amazing vehicles. I'd gladly buy one.

Every time I see his face, I remember Chris Farley’s cousin runs Ford, and still can’t believe it.

I love how it's byd that they're using as the benchmark instead of another particular company

I just spent some time in Europe and was blown away by BYD cars and their pricing. Astounding. The US and Europe are *way* behind. *WAY* behind.

BetaRayBill245 :
The only reason the US is blocking BYD from selling there is because pretty much every single US car manufacturer will nosedive in sales when it comes to EVs. You can get the higher end trims of BYDs for the same price as the base model with no bells and whistles of any US car manufacturer.

The concept and goals of the uev platform are really intriguing and all. But I don't think hardly anyone expects Ford to actually commit to the plan. Us car manufacturers have a tendency to set lofty 5 or 10-year goals, ride along for 2 or 3 years, then scrap it and start over.
The fact they're prioritizing an electric pickup instead of a hatchback or crossover tells me they aren't all that serious.

Good. Now, allow BYD in, with a proportional tariff to compensate for wage disparity, and see who’s car wins

I can’t take Ford’s EV aspirations seriously because 6 months after they announce going “all in on electric” they then quietly cancel all said EVs
