Viewing a handscroll is an active process that involves your upper body and careful movements. In this video, Akiko Takesue (Bishop White Committee Curator of Japanese Art and Culture) demonstrates how one would view a handscroll. Handscrolls are viewed and read from right to left. You unroll the scroll to your shoulder width and enjoy the scene or texts in front of you. To "turn the page" you repeat the rolling and unrolling process with both hands.
