remmembance :
I’m all for giving people the chance to make up for things they do as kids. Obviously having a “racist phase” as a child is NOT normal or excusable, but you mature a lot between childhood and adulthood, so if you’re able to demonstrate that you’re a new person, you should get the chance to be said new person (while understanding that those hurt have no obligation to forgive and forget.) But for something this hateful, you have to show VERY clear change and VERY clear regret. He has not done either. He only apologizes for things when they become big news and he gets a lot of pushback. He actively diminishes the severity of the things he’s said when he apologies. He deliberately words his apologies in a way that those who didn’t see the news previously wouldn’t know what he had done. The best apologies explain precisely what you did, explain why what you did was harmful, apologize sincerely and specifically to the communities/people affected, and explain how you’ll be better going forward. A good apology does not try to justify your actions with any sort of “I know this was bad, but for context…” That is a statement, not an apology. The people complaining that he’s being held accountable for things done at 14 are entirely missing the mark. He’s being held accountable for still, at his grown age, obscuring and dismissing the harm of the things he did at 14. Having the job of content creator or influencer is a privilege, not a right, and just like any other job, the things you say can lead to you getting fired.
