@travelreinhard: Before today’s Brussels-North station existed, an older and far more monumental station stood near Place Rogier. 🚂 The first “North Station” opened in 1846, replacing the even older Allée Verte station from the very beginnings of Belgian railways. Designed in a grand neoclassical style, it once stretched from today’s Rue d’Aerschot to Rue du Progrès — a true gateway to Brussels. But Brussels changed dramatically in the 20th century. During the construction of the North–South railway connection, the old station was demolished in 1955 and replaced by the modern Brussels-North station we know today, built a few hundred meters further north in 1952. Almost nothing of the original station survives. The monumental façade disappeared, the tracks were raised, entire streets changed, and the Rogier International Centre (later the Martini Tower) rose on the old site. Yet a few traces remain: the old urban layout, parts of the railway axis, and even some sculptures from the original station façade, relocated to Diest. #brussels #bruxelles #belgium #History #station
