One of the hardest parts of immigration is realizing that, even when you finally adapt to your new country, you still miss your family, your friends, and some memories are still there. And when you go back home, you discover you’re no longer the same person who left. Sometimes, it feels like you belong to two places, but completely to neither.

I don’t flip a switch when I go back to my home country—why bother? This is the new me, and that’s the person I want people from my hometown to see. It’s okay if some people judge me. That’s their opinion, and I’m at peace with who I am.

So true! After 16 years of living in Denmark I feel really hard to flip the switch when I visit my home country.

as a Moldovan who's been living in London for the past 12 years, going back to visit my family is traumatic. I love them and they are my roots, but my branches are reaching for the sky now...

I could never adapt to the American society. That wasn't me. I felt I never fit and after a couple of years I decided to go back to Mexico.

As a Polish person who lived in the UK for almost two decades, I understood exactly what you meant. It's also interesting how different I sound when I speak Polish versus English. Each language seems to bring out a different side of my personality.

I don’t understand why should I go back to an old personality when it was one of the reasons why I got out of there. 😅 I didn’t want to be like that anymore. I’ve changed and that’s me now. I’m not going to be toxic just because it would be easier for them. They have to accept me as I am now.

I left Ivory Coast 🇨🇮, moved to Japan 🇯🇵 where I lived for 7yrs, then moved to the UK 🇬🇧, stayed there 4 years, then moved back to 🇨🇮. I don’t know who I am anymore 🤷🏽‍♀️. I feel like I don’t fit anywhere …

moving to another country can also bring out what you used to keep hidden, and other characteristics that weren't developing, yet, because of the way things were in your life: family, history, hardships. Therefore, it is freeing
