One of the hardest parts of immigration is realizing that, even when you finally adapt to your new country, you still miss your family, your friends, and some memories are still there.
And when you go back home, you discover you’re no longer the same person who left.
Sometimes, it feels like you belong to two places, but completely to neither.

As a Polish person who lived in the UK for almost two decades, I understood exactly what you meant. It's also interesting how different I sound when I speak Polish versus English. Each language seems to bring out a different side of my personality.

I’ve lived abroad for 10 years. It has changed me a lot but I also think I would have changed if I stayed in my home country in different ways because we are always growing and evolving through out life. Change is the only thing you can be sure of in life.

moving to another country can also bring out what you used to keep hidden, and other characteristics that weren't developing, yet, because of the way things were in your life: family, history, hardships. Therefore, it is freeing

I could never adapt to the American society. That wasn't me. I felt I never fit and after a couple of years I decided to go back to Mexico.

I hear this from lot of people who left home so it kind of resonates with me too, I agree with the feeling of contrasting perspectives and values when coming back to your home country, especially with parents. But I’ve also noticed another phenomenon: without meaning to, we sometimes carry this ‘I grew but you didn’t’ superiority stance which isn’t really true. There’s a kind of expat tunnel vision, and if we don’t put in the effort to ‘re-discover’ our people, we risk missing out. Their lives kept going without us, but we tend to assume everything stayed the same, almost like they froze in time. They’ve gained new experiences we weren’t part of too, and we owe them the same curiosity they show us.
