“ You take a show on the road to see what works!!!“ is much funnier than that crowd gave him credit for. Of course I was a drama major, so there you go.

Jokes on you, I am from Lawrence Ks and performed a locally written rock musical about teen pregnancy at Kansas high schools my senior year. It was called Scrapbooks😂

I live near this high School. Patton is the reason why graduation speakers are now required to write and submit their speech ahead of time and they must stick to it word for word. I've never heard his speech but I bet it was epic.

We only had a teacher on the piano and a terrified student turning the pages.

No shade but “The lights went down, the curtain went up,” and then they remembered which school district they paid to live in* 😅

My friend is the stage director for a private high school and he built a revolving set for their production of Clue. It was professional. It was crisp. These are not our high school musicals of the 90s and 00s.

We helped paint our own sets. We either sewed our own costumes or went to goodwill. Now my kid has professional Broadway sets and they order beautiful costumes and had flies for Mary Poppins. It's wild.

My kids did Matilda this year. The level of choreography, live orchestra, and so many talented singers made be cry!

As a high school tech kid. We had two quotes. Piss us off you’ll act in the dark. If we build it. They might act. As the head of lighting…. I might have had influence on one of those more than the other.

The one musical my daughter’s HS did with canned music was HORRIBLE (it was Wizard of Oz)… this year Mamma Mia and it was phenomenal. You don’t even know how much the live music makes a difference. And the level of talent kids have now- everyone takes private lessons for instruments, voice, dance etc… it’s CRAZY

My parents met working back stage at a fairly prestigious playhouse in the 70s. My mom did lighting design and direction. When I got into doing the playing my high school, it was amazing to watch the pro in her come out and have no time for the cheerleader who was too cool to hit her marks

Broad Run HS is a little different these days. This year we did Little Shop of Horrors with a live orchestra. The kids were great.

I volunteer with our high school theatre program - my daughter graduated 3 years ago, but my wife is a sub in the district and the assistant theatre director, I am the de facto tech director, and it’s stunning what these kids are capable of when you give them a bit of guidance and the tools to make great art with. Our lighting senior took home a regional award for her work this year (as did our 20-person orchestra) and we took the show to state in January. All this was done with less than $10K in budget (including licensing). Don’t just go to support your kids, go to support performing arts in your community. Some of these kids *will* be on Broadway!
