The copper IUD is a small piece of flexible plastic shaped like T, and it has copper wrapped around it. This non-hormonal birth control is placed into the uterus by a doctor. Once inserted, it can be left in for 5 – 10 years (depending on the type). It prevents pregnancy by releasing copper into the uterus which: 👉🏼creates a toxic environment for the sp*rm, making it difficult for sp*rm to get to an egg 👉🏼thins the lining of the uterus, (less chance an egg will attach to it) The copper IUD is more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy, but it does not offer STI protection. It can also be used as emergency contraception. In fact, it’s the most effective form of emergency contraception inserted within 5 days after unprotected activity.  The most common side effect of the copper IUD is heavier and longer periods — especially the first 3 to 6 months after insertion.  IUDs aren’t for everyone and that’s okay! Talk to a doctor about your options for IUDs or other long-term contraceptives. You can always try it and if you don’t like it, get it removed 🩺🩷🚫🫄🏻
