📍 St. Maarten / Saint Martin We recently visited the island and rented SXSs to make a full loop around it. If you’re starting near the cruise port, head northeast in a circle to avoid the worst traffic. It was one of the best ways to see both the Dutch and French sides in a single day. Here’s everywhere we went: 1️⃣ Philipsburg The capital of the Dutch side and the main cruise port. It sits along Great Bay Beach and is packed with shopping, casinos, restaurants, and a waterfront boardwalk. The harbor is often filled with cruise ships and superyachts. 2️⃣ Prince’s Quarter A quieter, primarily residential area east of Philipsburg. We hugged the coastline instead of cutting inland so we could enjoy the waterfront homes and ocean views. 3️⃣ Oyster Pond Located right along the Dutch and French border, this area has a laid back marina vibe. Near here we detoured up to Naked Boy Hill, which gave us incredible elevated views of St. Barths and surrounding islands. 4️⃣ Quartier d’Orléans One of the first towns you pass after crossing into the French side. It has more of a local feel and less of a tourist crowd compared to other parts of the island. 5️⃣ Orient Bay Home to Orient Beach, a long stretch of white sand about a mile long. It’s lined with restaurants, beach bars, water sports, and shopping. It’s one of the most popular beaches on the island for good reason. 6️⃣ Anse Marcel A tucked away bay with a resort, beach, and restaurants. It was noticeably hotter here due to less wind, but the setting was beautiful and much quieter. 7️⃣ Grand Case Often called the culinary capital of the Caribbean. It’s packed with restaurants, beach bars, boutique shopping, and some of the clearest water we saw all day. 8️⃣ Marigot The capital of the French side. Known for its marina, open air markets, and strong French Caribbean influence. It feels completely different from the Dutch side and has more of a European island vibe. 9️⃣ Simpson Bay A busy area near the airport known for restaurants, nightlife, marinas, and beach bars. This side includes Maho Beach, where commercial planes fly shockingly low right over the sand. If you’re short on time, you can cut back across the island early and skip this area. Just know that traffic near the airport can back up quickly, especially if the drawbridge goes up. ➡️ About the SXS Rental: We paid about $200 for four hours for a four seater SXS, including insurance, and ended up with a Kawasaki KRX and a Yamaha RMAX. We rented from SAX ATV Rentals and Tours near the airport and had no issues. There are plenty of rental options depending on where you’re staying. Touring the island this way was one of the best ways to see everything at once. If you’ve been to St. Maarten or Saint Martin, what was your favorite spot? We are Megan and Brian, and we share our travel adventures to help others decide what is worth exploring. #stmaarten #sintmaarten #saintmartin #caribbean #islandtour
