All of the rules are based on social capital and access to power and resources. The most popular kid at school doesn't have the same set of rules as anyone else attending, the same way that billionaires aren't subject to the same laws. Rules aren't based in logic or sound reasoning, they exist to solidify existing structures of power. Once you understand this paradigm, you can better understand what rules can be challenged and which ones cannot by finding out how others feel about these rules and assessing power dynamics.

If you start out giving 110% then you are going to be expected to give that amount forever. Go in with less until you’ve gauged the general atmosphere and then give that same amount

I think I finally figured out why this happens! You can break the social rules, but only in the right conditions. The rule breaking has to be appropriate for the place/situation, the people around you have to be okay with you breaking it, and the delivery/timing has to be right as well. If any of these are off, that’s when people react badly because they aren’t expecting it. Now, if only it weren’t so hard for me to pick up on all of the cues in the moment,,, 🥹

ive found if you ask your boss before you break a rule they usually are more likely in the future to let you! I.E. I ask my boss “Hey John can I leave 30 minutes early today since I didn’t take a lunch?” this allows the boss to have autonomy over the decision (they like that) and presents you as responsible for asking!
