🚨 A driver in Arizona captured video footage appearing to show U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) cameras disguised inside large yellow highway barrels designed to look like crash cushions — part of a growing covert automated license plate reader (ALPR) network along Arizona roads. The hidden cameras have been documented in multiple disguises, including orange traffic cones, yellow barrels, speed trap signs, and overhead highway signs. Several of the identified surveillance sites are located more than 100 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, with cameras spotted near Apache Junction, Buckeye, and Maricopa. Approximately 100 covert ALPR sites have been identified in the border region to date. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has asked CBP to cease using orange traffic cones for camera concealment, citing concerns that they could confuse drivers in active construction zones. CBP, along with the Drug Enforcement Administration and local law enforcement, has been building out a sweeping license plate reader network across U.S.-Mexico borderlands for years — with the agency set to receive more than $2.7 billion for expanded border surveillance systems under the Trump administration.
