Officers initially stopped Roberts for speeding and quickly discovered an unsecured six-year-old child in the front passenger seat alongside an invalid digital driver's license. When Officer Ronald Ammerman ordered Roberts to step out of the vehicle, Roberts instead accelerated violently, trapping the officer against the open driver-side door. As the car sped away at speeds reaching 70 mph, the officer clung to the vehicle's frame while Roberts actively kicked him away and attempted to grab his service weapon, prompting the officer to fire his pistol and kill Roberts.An extensive investigation by the New York State Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation cleared the officer of criminal wrongdoing. The final state report concluded that Officer Ammerman's use of deadly force was fully justified under New York law because he faced an immediate, life-threatening danger while being dragged at high speeds. Following the crash, the officer immediately rescued the child, who was physically unharmed, and investigators later recovered a loaded, stolen handgun from underneath the driver's seat.
