The screw is actually a maintenance hack. Gas station owners sometimes place a self-tapping screw into the nozzle cradle to act as an inexpensive, quick repair when the internal lever or flap becomes loose or overextended from years of wear. The screw catches the flap, allowing the pump to properly engage and operate.
