6 months of income sounds better to me.

i don't do expense based emergency fund. my goal has (and finally reached!) one year gross salary. 6 mo protection from job loss + potential major event (20k set exclusively for unexpected repair to home, replace car, or medical stuff).

My husband and I saved a six month emergency fund based on bills/groceries/gas. What we realized when he got laid off for two months was that between my income and what would otherwise be our discretionary income, we used quite a bit less of that emergency fund than we expected. So, with small changes to our “fun” spending, our 6 month EF could stretch way further if at least one of us was still employed.

I did 3 months of my current income + additional 5k. realistically this would last me more than 3 months since I'm self employed so I wouldn't be setting aside money for taxes or saving etc I'd also limit my fun and spending categories. it would likely last me more like 5 months. however even if I were to stop what I'm doing today I could easily within a week have a job even if its a retail position so id never be completely at a $0 income. The amount i came up with is truly just what I feel comfortable knowing i have on hand. House emergencies and cars have their own fund so for context that isn't included.

More obviously sounds better but is harder to get to! If my husband lost his job today he could easily have another job lined up within a couple of days because of his skill set. But it’s still a scary thought to be without income for any period of time!

That’s totally fair. I know some people with computer science degrees who get laid off and are without jobs for months or more. I’m a nurse and don’t think I’d need more than a week to find a job.

We could survive on three but we keep saving just in case we don’t want it extra trimmed up or if a big expense comes up and we have to drain a lot of it. I’m also a former teacher

I’m a stenographer who works for the state, but if I ever lost my job I could have freelance work booked by Monday. Worst case scenario is it takes 4-6 weeks to get paid sometime. I also bartended for 10 years and can always go back to serving in a pinch. Thank you for helping me realize I don’t need to stress about being out of work for 6 months because that won’t happen.

You might be able to get a job quick if your laid off/fired Ect. But what if you have a medical emergency keeping you from being able to work

This part 👆👆👆 not to mention if you did get laid off you would likely get some sort or unemployment unless you were fired with cause and the more debt you pay down/monthly payments you end the lower your monthly expenses are. If the debt interest rate is higher than the rate of return in high yield savings then prioritize the debt imo.

I spend more money when I'm unemployed than when I'm employed. Mostly just out of boredom but I always take that into consideration when setting my emergency fund amount.

It's called "emergency" fund. Not "I love going out to dinner with my friends" fund. 🙄 It's 3-6 months of absolute necessities. 🤌
