So there are people who go to sleep and just.......stay sleeping?

Fun fact, before electricity was a thing, it was the norm to go to sleep, and then wake up for a bit around midnight. It was common to write in a journal, talk to your neighbors, low energy sort of stuff during that bit awake and then you’d go back to sleep again

Tell me you don’t have insomnia, without telling me you don’t have insomnia. I’m lucky if I fall asleep before 4am lately. 🫠

They say that before electricity humans slept in two phases, waking up in the middle of the night

actually, this is how people used to sleep before the industrial revolution. The idea that you need to sleep "a full, straight 8 hours" is a complete myth and propaganda that factories of the time pushed so that they could legally get more work out of their workers(like 15 hr days) without any hassle from oversight committees and the like, because employees technically got the legally required amount of sleep.
humans can absolutely break up their sleep cycles and still be nicely rested. In fact, depending on how quickly one falls back asleep, your brain can actually get to deeper REM because it is essentially still at some level of the REM you just left. It's why 'sleeping in' sleep feels so much better than through the night sleep.

Rachel Parrish :
Fragmented sleep is unhealthy. (Not “get up to pee & go back to sleep). Intentionally waking yourself, avoiding natural, solid sleep patterns for fun is an awful idea. Search studies re: fractured sleep, sleep deprivation, and long term impact / co-morbidities.

I recently learned that humans natural sleep schedule is apparently something like sleep 3-4 hours wake up in the night for 1-2 hours then sleep another 2-3 hours we never had the 8 hours till around the Industrial Revolution.

Eyvind :
Historians and sleep researchers actually found that before artificial lighting, people slept in two chunks, fall asleep a few hours after dark, wake up naturally in the middle of the night for an hour or two, then fall back asleep until dawn. That middle-of-the-night waking was totally normal and wasn’t considered insomnia. The solid 8 hours thing is basically a post-industrial invention.

i would prefer to wake at 12 or 1am. 3am is too close to my wakeup time and I'm likely to stay awake for an hour or more sometimes

WAAAAAAYYYYYYY back in the day people did that. it was normal for people to wake up in the middle of the night to go for a walk, read, and/or pray and then go back to bed. Early or before the 1800s.
