If you actually do some research it’s quite interesting. Hazelnuts only grow in the PNW (in the USA). There is a blight that affects the Eastern US that has largely prevented commercial hazelnut production. Researchers at NJ’s own Rutgers created a blight resistant variety named Raritan (after the NJ river). NJ has now become the 1st east coast state to start to scale up commercial hazelnut production.

Rutgers engineered a seed that is resistant to rot. This is an opportunity for a new cash crop for farmers in the state. Ferraro is investing and is also committed to purchasing from NJ farmers. Declaring a “state nut” is a promotional tool to attract more interest and investment. So thanks to the NJ GOP for actually doing something for once to advance the state’s economic interests.
