People keep saying the U.S. was founded as a Christian nation, but that's not what the Founders built. Many of them were religious, some weren't, but they overwhelmingly rejected the idea of govern-controlled religion. Jefferson called for a "wall of separation" between church & state, & Madison warned against mixing the two. The U.S. wasn't founded as a church. It was founded so Americans wouldn't be forced into one.
