@mio.travel: you legally have to stay alive on this ancient greek island ✨ (ep 8 of me sharing the best places to visit in europe this summer) For travellers who want a dose of ancient history a half-hour boat from Mykonos. 📍 Delos, Greece At its peak this tiny island was one of the busiest trading ports in the ancient world, home to thousands of people, before it was abandoned and left completely empty. Here are 4 tips for visiting: 1. Boats run from Mykonos Old Port, about 30 minutes each way (also from Naxos and Paros). 2. Go early and bring water, a hat and sunscreen. There's almost no shade and it gets seriously hot. 3. Wear proper shoes. You're walking over rough ancient streets for a couple of hours. 4. Don't miss the row of marble lions and the old mosaics, and check the return boat. The last one leaves mid-afternoon and no one is allowed to stay the night. Send this video to the mio app and it'll save Delos straight onto your travel map. #Delos #Mykonos #GreeceTravel #EuroSummer #ancientgreece

Delos is a small island in the Cyclades, approximately 5 kilometres long, with no permanent resident population. The prohibition on dying or giving birth on the island was not superstition, it was a documented political act carried out twice in antiquity. The first purification occurred in 426 BCE, ordered by Athens under Nicias during the Peloponnesian War. All graves within sight of the Temple of Apollo were excavated and the remains transported to a designated burial site on the nearby island of Rheneia. A decree followed prohibiting any future deaths or births on Delos. The second purification occurred in 422 BCE when the entire population of Delos was expelled by Athens entirely, a decision later reversed under pressure from the Delian population and the Delphic oracle. The motivation was religious on the surface but political in practice. Athens controlled the Delian sanctuary and used its ritual authority over the site to assert administrative dominance over the Aegean island league. A purified, depopulated sanctuary was easier to control than one with a functioning local community. At its commercial peak in the 2nd and 1st centuries BCE, Delos was one of the busiest trading ports in the Mediterranean. Estimates suggest that 10,000 slaves per day were traded on the island at its height. The island's wealth came not from agriculture, the terrain is too rocky, but from its position as a neutral trading entrepôt between the eastern and western Mediterranean. The sanctuary provided legal protection: merchants of all nationalities could trade under its religious authority. The island was sacked by Mithridates VI of Pontus in 88 BCE and again by pirates allied with him in 69 BCE. After the second raid, the population did not return. The site has been uninhabited since the 1st century BCE. No one has been born or died there since because no one lives there.
