@hoolie_r: There are people who have it worse than I ever did. There are people who are direct targets for recruitment. I was never in those shoes. But being poor is not a strong enough argument for joining and then continuing to participate in US imperialism, particularly if you are in a combat role. We should constantly push back against imperial propaganda, funnel money into services and career pathways that eliminate the K-12 to military pipeline, and stop assuming that people who criticize military members are simply privileged and that’s that. #hottake #unitedstates #propaganda #military
No because if you join the military voluntarily you are just as bad as cops

Americans won’t admit it since it sounds like socialism, but most science and research in the US is done under “defense”. Every piece of tech we use today, cars, phones, internet etc.. comes from military. If your kid turned out to be an engineering genius, their options would be either in the private sector working for someone like musk, or public service.

You don’t think it’s honorable? I agree there are bad cops. Even bad people in the military. The job has to get done who is going to do it? There are always going to be criminals and very bad people in the world.

Thank you, Julie! I’ll admit that a lot vets revert to Islam but I still will never forgive them as a Muslim. It’s so hard because my family built 7 Muslim community centers and i really don’t believe they can ever repent or should ever be forgiven but I can’t say it because it’s a “sin” 🙄.

Within the US military, the poorest and richest quintiles are underrepresented. Does not see like they’re targeting the poor very effectively.

I got through my first degree using tuition reimbursement from one of my previous employers. I’m going back to complete my bachelors through my current employer. You do not have to join the military to get an education.

Prior navy here. For context, I had no direction in life and was scared. I was injured during boot and lost my ability to walk correctly now for the rest of my life. if I could go back in time with the one caviat being i wouldn't know id get hurt, I wouldn't go back. it's not worth it. there's too much going on that I wasn't aware of at the time.

Idk if anyone will see this but if your family household makes under $250k, there are colleges that will cover your tuition. They’re often very competitive schools, like basically every Ivy and T20 does this, and the income threshold varies. For example, UChicago will cover tuition, housing, food, and fees if your family’s combined income is under $125k

So I understand your point let me ask you a couple things. So my house was broken into years ago someone broken in and stole a lock box that I had. It didn’t have a lot in it. It had a little bit of money. It had my birth certificate and some other document. Now I don’t know who did it, but there were some folks in uniform who came and dusted for prints and they investigated those for the police officers and they were able to track down the person who did it. No, why do I have to hold them individuals to the same standard as the agents of the state with ICE who are doing what they’re doing?

When people are making the “veterans think they were doing a good thing” argument, do they think people join ice/IDF/cops/etc. just because they’re actively trying to be evil? They also think that those organizations are good, and they’re equally wrong.
