@dr.kareemq: Tart cherry is one of the few recovery supplements that actually has science behind it. But not for the reason the bottle says. What it is: tart cherry (specifically the Montmorency variety) is sold as juice, concentrate, or capsules. Marketed for muscle recovery, sleep, and inflammation. Unlike a lot of what we’ve covered, the evidence is actually reasonable. Muscle recovery (strongest evidence): → A meta-analysis of 14 trials found tart cherry reduces muscle soreness (DOMS) and speeds strength recovery after intense exercise → Effect is modest but real and consistent → Likely mechanism: anthocyanins (the antioxidants that give cherries their deep red color) lowering exercise-induced inflammation Sleep (the part most people get wrong): → Tart cherry is sold as a “natural source of melatonin” → But the melatonin content is tiny: a fraction of a microgram, versus 0.5 to 5 MILLIGRAMS in actual melatonin supplements → So if tart cherry helps you sleep (and small studies in older adults suggest it modestly can), it’s almost certainly NOT the melatonin → It’s the anthocyanins and a boost to your body’s own tryptophan → The marketing got the mechanism wrong Gout: preliminary evidence that tart cherry lowers uric acid. Early data. The honest caveats: → Many studies are small → Some are funded by cherry juice companies → Effects are modest. This is a nice-to-have, not a game-changer. Honest take: → Athlete or weekend warrior easing soreness? Low-risk, evidence-backed option. → Older adult with mild sleep trouble? Worth a try. → Just know you’re buying it for the anthocyanins, not the melatonin. Bottom line: real evidence, modest benefit, and the marketing explanation is wrong even when the product works.
