I have found there is a release when you decide that you don’t need their understanding for you to fulfill your portion of the relationship. I once observed that words of affirmation was a love language for me. Rather than sit in that position, I decided I wanted to change that about me. Why? Because it kept me in a position of awaiting someone to “fill my bucket”. I needed to shed my desire for them to understand me. Love requires sacrifices. Sometimes that means they won’t understand you (at least right now.) That does not change your decision to love. At least this is my perception. The wary variable is to guard one’s own heart against resentments for not having “your bucket filled.” Love cannot be diminished if it is true, but it can feel like a great distance has emerged. The surety one holds in their heart cannot be taken from them. That inner knowing can dwell in the isolated spaces. You cannot have wisdom without sorrow.

The conversations I end up having can only be had once. I'm unable to talk about everyday entertainment or sports. I already understand people well enough to realize gossip and questioning motivations would be like watching the same movie a thousand times. It's really not hurting me at this point. The fact is, to have richer social experiences you need to be in the room with truely exceptional thinkers contemplating very important and relevant or pressing matters that only wisdom and discernment enable you to have. The limiting factor in my case is... well, let's not go there. It's all good though. I'm 47. Half way through life. There is always a chance to improve.
