on one hand true, writers should take care to not reinforce harmful/any stereotypes. but there's an expectation I've recently seen: The Deep from the Boys is j/wish, yet he is portrayed very negatively, in that cause I think there is some sort of message going on, perhaps critique or vent? but with Clark: A character who refuses change/accountability like the Deep, I think his story is plain enough for people to project themselves to his struggle, even if he was white/Hispanic/Asian. His race and the 1990s setting is seasoning, he wanted to break into a white driven field, he wanted the white trophy wife, but the times make being a black man difficult, and so this "image" of being equal to whiteness failed, as it does for many men of color. The only reason Clark is black in the back rooms is because Chiwetel Ejiofor just so happened to be casted to play him. Being upset about this is in fact racist Black people deserve to be in Hollywood too.

I truly don’t think Clark was written specifically as black. I think he just happened to be cast as one.

Yeahhhhh I’m not black but I def noticed that right away. Id love to think it wasn’t purposeful, if anything I *think* Kane was trying to highlight POC actors in his film, but I do think it shows how colorblind casting can also have its pitfalls. Just because you’re not accounting for tropes doesn’t mean they don’t exist and you aren’t still accidentally playing into them. Something hopefully he’s aware of moving forward.

I definitely felt weird watching the movie initially because it really did feel like the trope, but I don't think it was intentional. still, knowing the history of the trope makes me uncomfortable

a lot of the comments are missing the point that, yeah, clark wasn't written as black. that's the problem, you can't slot a black man into that role in a movie and not think about the racist implications that happen as a result 😭 as op said it is an OLD trope that could have easily been avoided with any sensitivity

I feel like we should allow black men to feel anger. but i think more than anything Clark feels like a real man, like I've met so many Clark's in my life, Asian, White, Black, etc. I think this is something we have to accept with colorblind casting. that we should allow black men and other poc to be villians and do awful things, every character is treated the same so I do think if there are any implications they were mostly unintentional. but the actor who plays Clark did such a good job, that I could immediately recognize the type of guy hes playing, I think the problem is society not the movie

I'm a white girl who's tried very hard to be anti-racist and hyper aware of stereotypes for the last 10+ years since I was a teenager. So take that for whatever you want and disregard or call me out as necessary. At what point is it just not allowed for an angry character to be black? It didn't for a moment feel like Clark was a racist's idea of an angry black man. He's a deeply complex and well explained character, a protagonist and a sympathetic villain, he's intelligent and calculating and not allergic to reason. If anything, I think the makers were conscious and careful of that stereotype. How much would it fucking suck if Chiwetel was perfect for the role and wasn't cast because the script called for an angry man?

YALL JUST BECAUSE THE CHARACTER OF CLARK WASNT WRITTEN AS BLACK, IT IS STILL A STEREOTYPE THAT WE ARE SEEING PLAY OUT. The story of Clark is the way that it was written but when you have a black man in that role then it will read as a stereotype. Two things can be true at the same time. Clark was written this way and was portrayed by a black man; the story on a black man is a stereotypical story unfortunately

I genuinely don’t think this is a big deal coming from a black person; many black men are like Clark and it didn’t JUST show him as an angry black man. He was very complex.

i think part of this is that ppl refuse to see black ppl as actual PPL. they aren't a piece of representation that has to be perfect all the time, they are flawed just like everyone else. it's not a racist stereotype to depict a person as flawed or evil, especially bcs chiwitel was casted AFTER clark's character was written. clark's character didnt even feel like a character to me, he felt so real and reminded me of so many different people, including myself (not a black man obviously). i think it's important to have representation of everyone in both good and evil characters but that is just my two cents

Why is a Black villain in a movie = a racist trope? Don't you think Black people aren't people and therefore can't be evil? there's no need to add a good black character with bad black character because black people are people to and they can be evil. same works for man, women, Asians, Arabs, whites and etc.

It’s odd to stay limited at their skin color. Clark himself is feeling as a failure and has such a victim complex that he manage to even befriend his own still life. It only attacked once the therapist came in and he only chased her didn’t physically arm her at any given point while he could’ve. There’s a split moment where she even look puzzled at him and I don’t think we see aggressiveness but more like helplessness in the still life Clark created. Considering Clark himself is based off a real life guy who’s also a black dude I don’t really think the back trope is racist. There’s also this thing where if we want more ethnics actors, we’re going to have them portrayed as bad and/or villains too
