the appalachians are so old the mountaintops used to be river bottoms. they are so old the scottish highlands are in the same mountain range. they are literally older than trees. trees first appeared 400 million years ago. the appalachians were formed over a billion years ago.

It’s called the New River bc the person that discovered it just wrote “new river” on the map he was drawing at the time and just never got around to naming it. At least that’s the local legend. 😅

In WV history we were taught it was named the “New River” because its path is constantly changing due to our geography compared to most normal rivers.
