A year ago, I couldn’t get through the front door of Mark Butler’s office in my wheelchair. His office told the ABC they were in discussions about a more accessible space. So I went back to see what had changed. Same office. Same steps. I rang the doorbell and nobody came. It took someone else walking up the stairs and knocking before a staff member answered. Getting inside shouldn’t mean being taken down a side alley, through a roller door and up a steep ramp. I want to use the front door, just like everyone else. There’s also some context I didn’t cover in the video: the Department of Finance is responsible for administering federal electorate offices. After my experience, I lodged a disability discrimination complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission against the Commonwealth of Australia, represented by the Department of Finance. That process did not resolve the issue. I’ve now commenced proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia. People with disabilities should be able to access their elected representatives with dignity. How many other electorate offices around Australia have barriers like these? Watch what happened when I returned. Is this acceptable? And is your local MP’s office wheelchair accessible?
