Yep! And in the USA recidivism rates go *up* when people are incarcerated. If you care about public safety in the U.S., prison abolition actually makes communities safer. Our prison system isn’t going after the real cause of pain and violence and human suffering otherwise the rich would be locked up in them instead of running for congress.

I’m willing to hear you out. What is the abolitionists plan to deal with serial killers, sex traffickers, presidents that have committed war crimes and/or genocide, mass shooters?

Some people can’t comprehend that abolition is not about if the person “deserves” rehabilitation it’s about acknowledging that the prison system we have now doesn’t actually make the country safer!

In their defense though, at least in my albeit limited research, abolitionists seem to have a hard time proposing a tangible alternative that isn’t just more-comfortable prison. Prison being defined here most simply as “confined to a specialized facility excluded from society”. Maybe I’ll be wrong after I engage with more abolition work, but from what I hear from abolitionists I’m not expecting that to be the case.

Dehumanizing people who commit violent crimes is not the woke take they think it is. believing criminals are monsters doesn’t allow us to prevent crimes because we don’t understand that PEOPLE are the ones who commit crimes😭

Also, I love the argument "we can't afford a better system" as if the current system of prisons-for-profit isn't economically harmful to us

I just don’t like the equating of prison abolition with rehabilitation or restorative justice because they’re two completely separate things and you can in fact be for some level of incarceration while believing in rehabilitation. Most people believe the Norse model, which still does have prisons for those who refuse to undergo rehabilitation, is the best way to go and they do have the best material results worldwide

I remember reading the book from Angela Davis in college called our prison’s obsolete. It’s a very short book and I read it pretty quickly after reading it. I concluded that the book never addressed the actual question in the title. Instead, it told me more reasons that prisons were bad, which for me was not at all groundbreaking or even interesting. The problem with a lot of these alternative justice forms as they require voluntary cooperation and submission to informal tribunal by the predator which they typically refused to participate in. You can see this in anarchist circles, where they try to avoid using the actual legal system. The abusive predator refuses to attend or meaningfully participate in the justice circle or whatever they call it and continues, abusing people.

people just dont want to admit how much they love punitive "justice" and that they would rather see people suffer in punishment then actually, like, help people

A lot of it is because people believe in punishment purely for punitive sake rather than actually reducing harm.

I would like to learn more about this. What are some sources that you suggest for learning how recidivism rates for violent se*ual offenders with minor victims, are reduced with rehabilitation?
