For months, they secretly widened ventilation openings in their cells using homemade tools. To fool guards during nightly bed checks, they crafted realistic dummy heads from soap, toilet paper, paint, and real human hair. After climbing through hidden openings behind their cells, they crawled through utility corridors, reached the roof, and disappeared into the darkness. Investigators later discovered they had also built a makeshift raft and life vests from stolen raincoats. The FBI concluded the men likely drowned in the cold waters of San Francisco Bay.
