Cheers was better than Seinfeld and Friends despite the popular thinking.

I can't remember if it's the pilot, or just early in the first season, but Coach gives a guy great, caring advice on how to deal with his queen son. it's lightyears ahead.

Widows Bay is one of those shows that has a mountain of respect for its audience in the same way shows like Arrested Development and Veep had

Timothy is too good to still be unknown, or “that’s the guy from…”

The Cheers pilot is still the best sitcom pilot of all time and this economy of exposition is the reason.

If you respect the audience or expect more of them, then you necessarily make the audience smaller. All you have to do is read TikTok comments about any tv show or movie to understand the average person really isn’t going to receive that respect. Arrested Development is an example of this, it struggled for a reason

Those type of jokes are what makes a show re-watchable over and over.

I watch the Cheers pilot like once a year. It’s a perfect pilot.

People in this era can't understand the unmatched power of that Cheers / Night Court lineup. I was like 8 years old and obsessed.

that was why cheers was so great. they didn't over explain things. the writing trusted that the viewer was smart enough to make some inferences. and that's why the frasier reboot failed. everything was over explained and dumbed down.

The way it played up without being pretentious, too. Even watching as a kid, I didn’t feel like it was over my head (even though it largely was).

I think the shows that have longevity have “respect for its audience “ like don’t insult the audience intelligence by assuming “they won’t get it”🥰

Brandon Tartikoff believed in Cheers. I think it was doing poorly first season but he stuck with it. Now execs cancel shows after a few episodes. NBC in the 80s was special.

Becker is kinda the same way. Didn't notice when I watched it as a kid but as an adult I realize how heavy that show is most of the time.
