For a few moments, only the sound of the sacred pool and the distant sea filled the temple. Claudio stared at the scarlet tail lying on the stone floor. “Now you understand,” Apollo finally said. “That relic does not grant power without demanding something in return.” Claudio remembered the voice in his mind, the rage he had felt in the Colosseum, and how easily the tail seemed to control him. “What will happen to me?” he asked. Apollo’s expression darkened. “If you continue using it, a day will come when you won’t be able to remove it. The tail slowly claims its bearer until it becomes part of them.” A chill ran through Claudio. “You mean…” “I mean you could become a triton forever.” The gladiator turned pale. Apollo pointed toward the relic. “I escaped only because I realized the danger before it was too late. You still have a chance. You must get rid of that tail as soon as possible.” Claudio looked at the scarlet scales. Part of him feared them, yet another part remembered the incredible speed, strength, and freedom he had felt beneath the waves. Suddenly, the ground trembled. The temple columns shook and dust fell from the ceiling. Ripples spread across the sacred pool. Both men looked up. The tremor lasted only a few seconds. Through the temple entrance, the silhouette of Mount Vesuvius loomed against the sky. Apollo stared at the mountain in silence. “Another one…” he muttered. Claudio frowned. “What is it?” The old priest did not answer immediately. His eyes remained fixed on Vesuvius as unease spread through the temple.
