At oil and gas sites in Northern Canada we ran a fleet of F150s during the spring muddy season we would get the undercarriage of the trucks pressure washed once a week because of this exact issue.

I work in oil & gas in northern BC where it's just constant mud and one of our trucks had the cable pop right off because of this. I've had to get under my f-150 twice last year to clean around the cable. Not fun when the truck won't go into park and you're laying under it trying to clean enough mud out for it the stop jamming up 😅

At least the dirt was dry and compacted and not sopping wet. This is a new one for me to see as well.

Cable didn’t end up being stretched from all the mud tension?

I would of pressure washed it rather then breaking the hardened dirt. would of made more of a mess but also would get rid of most of it without the risk of anything breaking

You say "easy diag" but you did some detective level clue putting together with the sign on the side.

I bought a 2017 F250 SD from Texas that was like this. Took a day to chip the big stuff off then another day with the power washer in the frame and all over everything else to flush it all out. After it was all cleaned up the truck was a total POS and would always have a problem. These work trucks that are in those conditions always have odd parts worn out and damaged due to that environment. Stay away from work trucks like this. They are junk and there will always be something.

As a LV mechanic in the mines west Aus, mud is always an issue, most of the time it’s just a nuisance when working on vehicles but sometimes it’ll build up like what it was on that o2 wire then over rough surfaces the weight of the ball of mud will pull the wires out of plugs or sensors

My initial thought after you said the selector solenoid was clicking was the physical join at the gearbox/transmission only because I've had a similar problem with mine where the swivel joint had broken so needed replaced.
