 Thousands of clothing labels need to survive years of washing, drying, and daily wear without their edges fraying apart. One of the simplest ways to achieve that starts with a single heated wire. The orange glowing line is a resistance wire, typically made from a material such as nichrome. As electrical current passes through it, the wire heats up enough to slice through synthetic label material almost instantly. At the same moment the label is cut, the heat melts the polyester or nylon fibers along the edge. This fuses the material together, creating a clean, sealed border that resists fraying and makes the labels durable enough for use in finished clothing.
