Data center coverage part 3: Last week, we traveled across the country and visited communities impacted by data centers. Our first stop was Lowell, Massachusetts. This is part three of our interview with Jake, a resident of Lowell who has a data center steps from his backyard. The data center, which is operated by the Markley Group, is located in the middle of his neighborhood and directly behind Jake's home. In this part, Jake talks about the sounds the data center emits, which he describes as a "hum." While we were there, our crew of four could hear some sounds (two of us picked up on the hum; all of us heard what sounded like a quiet fan). Prior to the Markley Group moving in and creating their data center, the location was owned by Prince Macaroni, a company that made pasta there for decades. Jake and other neighbors (who declined to be on camera) told us they rarely had issues with Prince Macaroni. Jake called them "neighborly" and said that since Markley took over, major installations have gone on at the facility that are much more intrusive than what Prince Macaroni had going on there. Jake also said that Prince Macaroni had many of the locals working there before the company left. He claimed that Markley "hardly" employs anyone from the local area and said they have a 20-year tax break "that is costing the taxpayers of Lowell $77 million." He adds, "The payback was supposed to be that half the jobs in this facility would be sited here." According to Jake, when AI started rolling in the facility went from 7 diesel generators to 21 (Markley says there's 23), which Jake told us emit fumes when running that blow into his home. Jake, who proudly told us that he has FOIA request hundreds of documents from the state/city related to the facility, accuses the city of "selling out" the people of Lowell by allowing the company to make "major site plan modifications" without resident input. We'd like to note that the Markley Group has reached out to us related to our interview with Jake, disputing basically everything he is claiming. We posted our interaction with them two posts back and have requested an interview with them so we can show their side of the story.
