Look up Tim Pierce’s video on YouTube about iris. He was hired to play the mandolin parts but instead also contributed to the slide solo. Talks about how the song was made. May have a bit about how the tuning came about. It’s been a while. But Rzeznik originally sang the song in a different key when he demoed it before it got cleaned up.

I love it when artists do these strange things with their instruments. Playing it on a broken guitar is incredibly poetic and fitting for that song too.

This sounds like a sequel to the song with the potential for much sadder lyricism

It’s not that I dislike the way this sounds, it’s very pretty. BUT — John’s version is ART. It’s poetic. It’s its own collective rendition of something magical that, no matter how you try to recreate it, it just can’t be topped. It’s irresistibly soul-bending and no matter how you try to tune it, NOTHING is better than that broken 4-string guitar that Iris was born on. Period.

The bad tuning was intentional and gave the song it's unique character. To disregard that shows lack of understanding of the music.

Growing up in the 90s learning to play by ear with no tabs was hard and i gave up learning so many songs. Now when i try to learn those same songs and see all the different tunings and that so many bands would tun down a half or a full step it makes sense why i had so much difficulty back in the day🤦

He tuned to that because the original score was worked up on a mandolin, he then tuned his guitar similarly to accompany.

It's like eating plain food. The taste is there but you can't really feel the love of the process of cooking it.

B/D/D/D/D/D is crazy. I know it was for a different instrument but still wild.

I remember the story being that he wrote it on a guitar with only four strings. So when having a full set of strings it makes sense to make it an open tuning.
