Fair point, and I agree it shouldn’t be on you to get them to site. But with the cost of cars and insurance nowadays, it’s tough to expect every 18-year-old to have their own transport. The lads are at least putting themselves out there and trying by sending in their CVs. 👍

“How do you think that you’re gonna be able to start in a job if you can’t get there” well how do you expect them to get a car without a job? If that’s your only reason you aren’t hiring them then that shows where you are at. Maybe they aren’t in a situation to get a car, get insured and maybe their family can’t afford to hand them a car. Maybe giving them a chance would be the making of them. Maybe they will get there by whatever means, all you have to do is start them, give them a chance and give 3 months probation before signing them up.

Started my apprenticeship when I couldn’t drive, boss gave me the time to be in the yard every morning and I went in one of the vans with a lad who could drive. my dad dropped me until I got a car in phase 2. I worked for him for 9 years

Give the lad a chance. We all had to start somewhere, I wouldn’t expect a 1st year to be driving on that wage. At Least the lads are looking for a trade.

The cost of trying to drive on an apprentice wage is hard enough, insurance in around 3 grand and then petrol on top of that each week, if the van is provided well that’s fair enough

when I was an apprentice carpenter/joiner , 30+ years ago , I cycled 12 miles to & from the workshop every day. Eventually got my license & a car . No young lad nowadays would do that.

I hadn’t a car when i started nor did many other apprentices. Our boss gave crew cab vans to the foremen and you would arrange to meet them somewhere along the way.

I had the same issues when starting my apprenticeship i was applying without my full license and got nowhere, after i got my full license I eventually got into the trade but in all fairness if the lad isnt living too far away give him a chance to try snd get his license soon and try and organise a meet-up location to help him out a bit.

I was in a similar situation as the apprentice in the US years ago. The builder picked me up each morning at an agreed location and brought me to site. Because of this I worked hard for him as without him collecting me I’d have had no work. Might be something to consider especially with the price of cars/insurance these days

How do you reasonably expect a 17 year old to purchase a car / insurance / fuel for travel. When you are reflecting again, maybe ensure apprentices are paid a better wage!!

It’s not your problem how they get there. Frankly none of your business. If they want to work they will find a way. They hardly going to put on their CV what number box they will get

Did you ever think ,with the possibility of a start ,that maby as we all did in the construction 🚧 world,that they might drive unaccompanied, we never had the madness that the RSA have imposed on the youth of this country ,and yes I have sons Electricians but they had to get to sites even as learner drivers.its a goverment policy which is a curse
