@thebigpicturepod: Sean and Amanda unpack ‘Disclosure Day,’ and why it's a personal reckoning for Spielberg, but at times keeps the audience at a distance.
Be honest, Sean. This is NOT a good movie. It’s an ABSOLUTE MESS!

It’s incredibly messy and poorly written, but it is also ridiculously earnest and human

Sean you’re too buddy buddy with Spielberg to openly criticize the film (which I understand that’s cool as hell) but this was underwhelming for a Spielberg summer blockbuster

Im convinced people praising this movie have never seen a good scifi movie prior to this. Literally anything by Denis Villeneuve is better. How is anyone giving this an 8 or 9 out of 10 when Arrival exists?

I get what you’re saying, that ultimately it’s Spielberg’s thesis film summing the message of his entire filmography. But the movie is so dated it borders on parody. If you told me this came out the same summer as “Knowing” or “The Happening,” I would believe you. It’s very hammy, cliche, and evocative of a late 00s blockbuster (blue and gray color palette included) - right down to Emily Blunt’s character driving through the city listening to “Sweet Escape” by Gwen Stefani. It feels like a movie that was supposed to come out in 2007 and then promptly parodied by the David Zucker-era Scary Movie crew

Yup, there is really no middle ground with a film like this. You'll either think that was the dumbest crap you've ever seen or really enjoy it. I ended up enjoying it overall but you really have to suspend your disbelief. The one thing that really grated me was the cgi animals. How can a master like Spielberg allow that to look that bad?

Meh! My opinion: It wasn’t controversial at all, it was just bad. It was disappointing. Not what I anticipated from Spielberg. It was just OK. Certainly not theater worthy but perfectly good for a Netflix evening. You know it’s not going well if you keep checking your watch wandering when it’ll end. 5/10

No it isn’t, it’s just a bad movie from a director than hasn’t heard the word ‘no’ in decades. I don’t know why it is so hard to just accept that this movie it’s not what we all wanted it to be.
