@sarahrav: It’s no secret that my time in medicine almost killed me. - And I think the biggest reason why (more than the hours and the exhaustion) was this idea that we’re supposed to accept all of it with a smile. With gratitude. As if the system is doing us a FAVOUR. The 14-hour shifts, 7 days in a row. The mental overwhelm from having urgent 7 tasks competing for your attention. The constant anxiety and fear of making the wrong mistake that could cost a life. The superiors who look straight through you. And then, when you say anything about it, you’re met with: “Oh but how LUCKY are you to be a doctor?” “You’re saving lives, why would you want to do anything else?” That’s the part that really f*cking broke me 😞 I ended up leaving medicine because I just couldn’t take it any longer. And even then, I felt so guilty because of this exact attitude. I thought I was weak, for choosing not to suffer for such a prestigious career. But now that I’ve built a career that I genuinely LOVE and ENJOY every single day… I’ve learnt that suffering SHOULDN’T be a rite of passage. It’s not what makes you a good doctor. It’s not what makes you “worthy” of the title. And it was NEVER supposed to be the price you pay for a career that you love. The more that we say this out loud, and support others who are brave enough to say it too, the louder that calling gets. So, are you with me? 🙏🏽 - P.S. If you’re feeling the weight of medicine on your shoulders, and you’re not sure whether you’d be happier in a different career… I built a quiz to help you work out what’s best for you (and a free training to help you take action) 🩺🥹 Click the link in my bio to take it ✨ Love, Dr Sarah Rav 💗 - #doctorsoftiktok #doctorlife #australiandoctor #careerpivot #careerchange

I'm a 4th year med student and I've never been so unhappy in my life. I want to have my degree first before leaving cause I've worked so hard up to this point.
Your video is so encouraging ❤️

Watching this in my second year, right now I love it, it’s everything I want! I hope that doesn’t change but I’ll be back in my 4th year when I start clinical rotations

Proud of you ❤️I worked in a hospital for 3.5 years and I don’t see myself going back to it <3 had mental breakdowns and felt miserable everyday. Wish people understood healthcare professionals more and gave us support because without it nobody gonna stay in there long

Guys this is NOT necessarily a sign that you shouldn’t do medicine. It’s a sign to do what makes YOU happy 💖
I have lots of friends in medicine that love it and would choose it over and over. And I have lots of friends who have left and are much happier now.
If you’re not sure, the quiz I created is designed to help you work that out!! It’s what I wish I had all those years ago 🥰🥰🥰

Over here in Nigeria, I can relate so much. The seniors begin to tell you that during their time, they used to see up to 200 patients in a day so therefore we should count ourselves lucky to be doing less work. Yet the same work almost costs you everything- from losing friendships to losing relationships and missing out the special occasions of our loved ones. It’s really sad to choose to practice clinical medicine.
