@rochellekingandrews: “Use your seat” is one of the most common instructions in riding, but what does it actually mean? Most riders think the hips simply follow the horse’s movement. In reality, the hips can create, direct and shape movement. The horse can often feel a change in your pelvis before it feels a rein aid. Before you influence the horse, learn how not to disturb the horse. Open the hip, don’t lock the hip. Long spine. Lift the sternum. Relax the hip and allow it to follow. Your hips should move before your hands. Most riders steer with the rein, but the horse can feel subtle changes in your body long before it feels a rein aid. If you’re struggling with circles, lateral work or pirouettes, check your hips first. Your body is an aid, not just a passenger.
