One year ago today, my cat accidentally scratched my right middle finger — my dominant hand and my work hand as a dental hygienist, while I was sleeping. It looked like small puncture wounds — nothing major. I went back to sleep and woke up with it swollen knowing I couldn’t work the next day, I called Teladoc. They told me to go to the ER. I went to the ER, and they prescribed me antibiotics and told me to come back if I developed sausage finger or a fever. The next morning, I had both. I returned to the ER, and they said I needed emergency surgery. I wasn’t allowed to drive myself or be taken by my husband. They said insurance wouldn’t cover it unless I went by ambulance. Once one became available, they took me straight to Tyler, bypassing the ER and taking me directly into pre-op. Before surgery, I was sponge bathed, which was a first for me — I’ve had other surgeries before, and never experienced that. The surgeon told me they suspected the infection could be in my tendon. When I woke up, I found out it wasn’t in the tendon, but I did have two abscesses that required incision and drainage. Sometime after surgery, the power went out in the hospital for 4 to 6 hours. I was in my room recovering, and it got hot. No AC, no lights, no updates. The next day, they started me on Vancomycin — and I ended up with Red Man Syndrome. My day nurse would listen to my requests to ask the doctor for Benadryl and a slower drip, he kept insisting the drip needed to be faster. Finally, my surgeon confirmed that it should have been given slower with Benadryl to avoid the reaction. The drains were removed during my hospital stay. I was there for 3 nights and 4 days. While I was still hospitalized, I got the call from my fertility clinic: of the embryos from my last retrieval, only one came back genetically normal. At my two-week post-op, my surgeon told me I needed two more weeks off. I called my boss to update him — and he fired me. He said it was because of all the time I’d already needed off and what I might need in the future. I know it was more about my IVF than my finger. I did eight weeks of physical therapy after that. I wasn’t sure if I’d ever be able to work the same again. That finger is everything in hygiene — scaling, charting, polishing. Now, a year later, I still have a little numbness… But I’m working again. I’m still fighting for the family I deserve. #M#MedicalTraumaI#IVFJourneyI#IVFWarriorF#FiredForIVFI#InfectionRecoveryE#EmergencySurgeryR#RedManSyndromeD#DentalHygienistW#WorkInjuryH#HospitalStoryW#WorkDiscriminationF#FertilityStrugglesW#WomenInHealthcareO#OneYearLaterS#StillStandingI#IVFIsNotEasyI#InvisiblePainW#WhatIFoughtThroughM#MedicalSystemFailureH#HealingJourneyI#IVFAfterLossI#InfertilityAwarenessT#ThisIsIVFT#TTCCommunityT#TTCJourneyI#IVFCommunityT#TTCSupportInfertilityWarrior
