Where is the worker union who builds apps?… The one that buys the Capital assets and convert corporate structures into co-ops?… We need a space in Canada where we can organize these things

meh this is just capitalism acting as intended. calling it something new doesn't do any important work imo.

We need some updated Marx. We've advanced so much since Marx and we understand a lot more about people now.

Two things, the day worker with his own gear for the job is as old as time. India is where renting out a human for a day or even half day or for gig-work really got started. Second, in the UK a new trade union has sprung up to unionise gig-workers. Look up the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain. Unionising against the gig-worker apps is possible, not only that but non-for-profit or mutual-aid service apps could easily over service apps as these companies are highly vulnerable to people power from workers and customers. Most of us would happily opt to pay a little more to use a unionised or not-for-profit app.

Tbh all this technical feudalism stuff is just a worse version of monopoly capitalism by Sweezy and Baron as well as ignoring Marx’s comments on circulation and the domestic industry to create some fake advances in political economy. I prefer Tooze and fictions of financialization

I mean, the idea that capitalism is only about production when there's also circulation and circulation is probably where the actual lion's share of realised profits has happened historically (not going to deny that controlling production also contributes) is not exactly a useful idea anyway. People forget that capitalism is largely about the ability to engineer an asymmetric position to dictate terms to counterparties because you hold a legal fiction over real world capacity.

Interesting. Though is it also a case of asking what the “means of production” *are* in the Uber scenario? That Uber has changed the “means of production” – the tools that generate economic production – from being the car to being the data and the platform? The worker is only allowed to own and control the “means of production” when they’ve stopped being that and have just become an economically inert tool

What you are describing is more like the mid- 19th century (Marx’s day) than one might think. Workers often owned their own tools, entertwined family and domestic life with labor, etc. It wasn’t until after Marx was long dead that huge 10000 person factories became the norm. Capitalism isn’t dead, it just looks different than it did during the heydey of official communism and social democracy (which both failed) but more like it did in Marx’s day in some interesting ways (more fractured). It’s also important to understand the ‘means of production’ includes human labor. Seizing the means is not just about seizing factories, its about organizing labor of its own purposes.

yeah, feeling this as a contracted gig worker rn. it's so isolating. I never realized how much of my social life came from working face to face with people until I started working as an ESL teacher online

The Uber example is great because it really does seem they let us have the "means of production"...but not the information that allows it all to happen. It's kinda like the modern equivalent of the middleman

You start off saying capitalism is dead but what follows is how Marxism is dead (kind of!)😉 I was having an argument with someone the other day about how Marxist-Leninist categories and doctrines were of little practical use given the nuance of life. He was so soaked in it that he had the middle class defined out of existence. That example of the Uber driver is so spot-on. Another example might be African farmers getting their land back but forced to use Monsanto seed and Bayer pesticide. What's the use of owning the land if you don't own the seed? Or own the tractor but not the software that runs it?

Why did anyone ever willingly agree to the ripoff pay of "gig economy" jobs? The shareholders and CEOs get paid well. There should not be any shareholders or CEOs in such companies.
