I agree with other comments. Perhaps they missed that it was gonna be thrown away. And its their mothers cookbook. So I would give it back. But as you saved it, if the recipes are important to you, I would scan at first, keep the copy and return the original. That said, if they were extremely rude , that's off the table.

NTA, the family already sorted thru the belongings. Why would you tell someone "go see what you want" if its already been sorted? No one noticed the cookbook until some claimed it. It finders keepers.

Kinda the AH. maybe they didn't realize that they were throwing it away. in times of grief, it's hard to go through every item. And obviously has some type of sentimental value and to the OP it's just one of many other cookbooks.

could just use the app I scanner and just scan the pages and give the book back , turn the scans into jpg and go to a website that turns pictures Into a book 😎

NTA. If the cookbook was so valued, it should have been claimed by the family. OP was approached and asked if they wanted anything. OP took one item and 10 years later there is outrage from the family??? Not buying that they were grieving. It's literally 10 years later!

they only want it cuz someone else wanted it and has it. It's probably going to be tossed later after it was never used if given back. Same as when a kid sees you playing with a toy and cries and fights over it so you just give it to them and find something else to play with, they suddenly don't want it anymore again and toss it and cry for your other new toy 🙄
